General Rug Selection

Choosing rugs is one of the most enjoyable aspects of furnishing a home or work space. You don't need to be an expert to appreciate the colors, the textures and the sense of history woven into every rug. Over the years, we've found that certain conversations occur regularly - with first-time buyers and fanatics alike - because they bring clarity to the decision-making process. For example...What size is most appropriate? One large rug, or a mosaic of smaller rugs?

Shape is a choice. Often the 6 x 9 rug you love can be made in the 6 x 6 shape you want, and teamed with a coordinating 6 x 18 runner. We also make rugs to fit odd dimensions - around a hearth, for example, or down a flight of stairs.

Clients don't always think about traffic and durability - choosing a rug that is appropriate for the space. Of course, once someone falls in love with a certain rug, it's amazing how quickly space can be found…on a floor, draped over a tabletop, or on a wall - a nice alternative to framed art, especially in a large space.

Priority is another good question. Sometimes the rug is the focal point, the most important element in the room. And sometimes it's an afterthought - an accessory chosen to add a touch of warmth, color or texture.

Color is really the fun part. Designers bring in everything from chair cushions to poems to guide our artists. We start brainstorming, gathering ideas, pulling yarns - this is when clients start to get excited.

Over the years, we've come to understand that what is "traditional" to one person is "contemporary to another, and that perceptions of color vary widely. In the end, it's fun to see what people mean by "classic," or even what they mean by "red."

Why Custom?

With a world of extraordinary rugs to choose from, why advise your client to have one made? On one level, the answer is simple: because it isn't there. For a variety of reasons, there are times when the right rug simply can not be found. There are times when a custom rug is the only solution that really makes sense: When a space is too large to use a rug of conventional size. A very large room may require the unifying influence of a single rug.

When proportions are irregular. Long corridors and odd-sized rooms can be brought into balance with a rug designed to fit.

When color is critical. When the color scheme is already established, and the rugs your client loves are not available in related colors.

When a dominant focal point is involved. Sometimes a client wants a rug to complement a special piece of furniture or art that is clearly the focal point of the space.

As a commemorative gift. A custom rug is an exciting and meaningful way to celebrate a special occasion - the completion of a new home, a birth, a wedding anniversary. Businesses order custom rugs to mark mergers, product releases and other landmark events.

When large orders are being placed. Finding one great rug is a pleasure. Finding a number of rugs that work beautifully together is more challenging. With a custom order, sizes and colors can be carefully coordinated.

Or simply for the satisfaction of making a personal statement. For many people, the opportunity to create a personal aesthetic statement is an intrinsically interesting and satisfying experience.
